Louis Saha defends Manchester United duo after Brighton defeat

Louis Saha has come to the defence of Manchester United midfield duo Fred and Scott McTominay. The two midfielders – known as ‘McFred’ when played in together in a pivot – were criticised again last weekend after their performance in the 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Fred and McTominay not only started the game, but they chased the game. The Brazilian was deployed in a deeper role by Erik ten Hag, playing as pivot, while McTominay was given freedom to make runs into the final third.

It didn’t work, and Brighton won the midfield battle.

They also won the match which means we’re starting the season slowly yet again. Make sure to check the markets this weekend for the best odds, such as netbet sign up offer, which will cover everything you need.

Speaking about Fred and McTominay after the match, former United striker Louis Saha claimed the pair have their own respective qualities. He feels the whole team is at fault for bad performance and you shouldn’t single out one or two players.

“Everybody has to contribute, so I don’t totally agree that all the pressure and criticisms should be put on Fred and McTominay,” Saha said.

“They’re both hard-working guys and you can see they’re both really committed to the game, so I think it’s unfair on them.

“It’s only the first game, they need to improve that’s for sure, but everybody needs to step up. There are some big games coming up, so we will see if they can bounce back from it.”

McFred has been a regular combination at United for some time. Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the two formed a partnership and they played a lot of games under Ralf Rangnick too.

However, it’s not something I think we will see Erik ten Hag persist with over time. I would be surprised if we saw it again after this month – if United can get the players the manager wants in the transfer market.

Both have roles in the team – but not together. It doesn’t work and it never did to any great effect.

Usually, it’s McTominay who stays back to defend, but that wasn’t the case against Brighton. Ten Hag must view the players differently to Solskjaer and Rangnick. That said, I always thought we should be getting McTominay into positions where he can shoot from.

Now I question whether he warrants a starting spot in the team or not.

On the other hand, Fred has never been able to settle into his preferred midfield role at United and is usually deployed deeper than what we see of him in a Brazil shirt. He likes to attack, although neither of these players are great passers of the ball.

Ten Hag must address that in order for his midfield to function in a possession-based side.
