Chelsea could join the race for Frenkie de Jong with a formal offer in the coming days.
This means Manchester United will have competition in their summer-long transfer pursuit to sign the Barcelona midfielder.
Not only does De Jong want to stay at Barcelona, it sounds like Chelsea are looking to test the Netherlands international’s resolve in addition to interest from Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.
According to Sport, Chelsea have this morning informed Barcelona that they will try to sign De Jong, with a bid imminent from the Stamford Bridge club.
United already have an agreement in place with Barcelona, but the next step is convincing De Jong, who is waiting patiently for the €17 million he is owed in deferred wages since the coronavirus pandemic.
Thomas Tuchel already has a strong midfield but signing De Jong could help Chelsea prepare for N’Golo Kante’s exit.
At United, I think he would be our main outlet in midfield.
Fingers crossed De Jong signs for us! I really want to see him in the same midfield as Christian Eriksen next season.
Xavi admitted that his midfield star could leave the club this summer following their pre-season win over New York Red Bulls last night.
Chelsea can offer De Jong the luxury of Champions League football, whereas that is something he will have to wait for at Old Trafford.
The only way we are winning this race is if Ten Hag has a strong relationship with De Jong.
Otherwise, I could see him going to Chelsea. That would be a kick in the teeth for United…
Barcelona would like nothing more than a bidding war for De Jong’s signature.
