Jamie Carragher weighs in on Man United’s Premier League chances next season

Manchester United are preparing for one of their most important seasons ever.

Last season saw the Red Devils put in one of their worst ever campaigns and failure to qualify for the Champions League next time out will see Erik ten Hag start his United career in the Europa League.

Preparation will be key though and ten Hag has so far overseen a 100 per cent win record during his side’s pre-season tour, including scoring 11 goals and conceding just two.

Although many fans will not expect the Red Devils to start next season and automatically challenge for the Premier League title, they won’t wait forever, which is why ten Hag must get the team fit and firing as quickly as possible.

Speaking about the prospect of seeing United close the gap on rival duo Manchester City and Liverpool, Kop legend Jamie Carragher, who spoke to Sky Sports, said: “I wouldn’t say nervous. I think there’s a long road for United that they’re on at the moment in terms of challenging for the title.

“I think the first thing when it comes to Ten Hag and the players they’re bringing in will be, ‘we need to get this club back in the Champions League where it belongs’. That’s where Manchester United should be.

“They’re one of the biggest clubs in the world, never mind this country, so to not be in the Champions League just doesn’t feel right, not when United are in the Europa League.

“So I think that’s the first thing and I think once United do that, then it’ll be looking at the title in the next couple of years.”
