Ten Hag taking a risk by not signing a defensive midfielder this summer

I have long thought that Manchester United need to sign a defensive midfielder.

Attempts should have been made to replace Nemanja Matic prior to his departure, but Manchester United tend to leave these issues build up before amending them last minute.

Ralf Rangnick made several remarks about the club’s recruitment team down the years, and we can only hope that things get better with Erik ten Hag as first team manager.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag is focusing on signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, and will make him his priority signing this summer.

United are also being linked with a move for free agent Christian Eriksen, but it seems an out-and-out defensive midfielder to sit in front of the defence is out of the question for now.

Dare I say that Ten Hag is taking a huge risk here, but we must also try to realise that he is trying to change the way this United side plays and, in turn, our approach to football matches will become different too.

Reports have suggested that Ten Hag wanted Matic to stay for another season, however, the midfielder’s decision was made before the 2021/22 season came to an end, as per the Daily Mail. The Serb has since reunited with Jose Mourinho for a third time, at AS Roma in Serie A.

Someone like Ibrahim Sangare may have been the defensive midfielder we needed this summer, but I certainly prefer the idea of signing De Jong over a player like Declan Rice, who United were linked to for months.
