Gary Neville approves Harry Maguire captaincy decision

Former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville has welcomed the news that Harry Maguire will continue as Manchester United’s captain going into the new season.

A lot has been said about Maguire over the past 12 months and everyone knows his form in a United shirt has dropped dramatically, but there is a feeling Erik ten Hag wants to give everyone another chance to impress him in a new environment at the club.

Earlier today, Ten Hag confirmed that Maguire will remain club captain this forthcoming season, knowing that everyone from fans of his own to the media criticised him regularly throughout the most recent campaign.

Ten Hag said (via Manchester Evening News): “Harry Maguire is the captain. I have to get to know all the players, but he’s an established captain and he has achieved a lot of success.”

The decision to allow Maguire to remain as captain has been given the seal of approval by Garry Neville, who took to social media to react to the announcement.

Neville tweeted: “Good! So the same United fans fuming with me for applauding the decision to keep Maguire as captain seem to be without knowing crticising the new manager for his decision. Maybe support Maguire and stop bullying him on here (Twitter). The new manager obviously likes him.”

It’s a good point about the bullying Maguire receives online.

I never got why so many people seem to take joy in taking swipes at their own players, but sometimes you simply can’t explain social media and how some agendas get pushed through sections of the fanbase.

Personally, I would like nothing more than to see Ten Hag get the best out of Maguire next season. To see him bounce back at his critics and show that he is worthy of the cause at Manchester United.

The manager has made his decision.
