Manchester United welcomed a fresh face to the squad earlier this week when Tyrell Malacia sealed his move from Feyenoord to become the first signing of the summer.

Malacia is likely to be the first of many arrivals this summer and according to reports, United are closing in on their second signing of the summer.

That’s according to talkSPORT, who say that Erik ten Hag’s side are closing in on a deal to sign former Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha.

The 27-year-old was released by the Italian giants this summer after eight years at the club, which saw him make 164 Serie A appearances.

Strakosha, who has made 19 appearances for Albania, would most likely be signed as a backup to David de Gea. The Spaniard’s stocks rose last season and despite having just 12 months left on his contract, remains the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper.

SN’s verdict…
United are light in the goalkeeping department following Dean Henderson’s loan move to Nottingham Forest. Tom Heaton is still at the club after signing last year but after just one appearance, a brief cameo in a Champions League dead-rubber, he remains on the periphery.

Lee Grant also left the club, which would make room for another goalkeeper to join as De Gea’s deputy. Strakosha is an experienced goalkeeper but there have been question marks over him in Italy, with former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina keeping him on the sidelines at times.
