Frenkie de Jong wants to stay at Barcelona, says Koeman

Ronaldo Koeman won’t be returning to football manager until after the World Cup.

The former Barcelona manager will return to the Dutch national team when he replaces Louis van Gaal at the end of the year.

To talk about a range of topics, Koeman was invited to appear on a recent episode or the television program Vaques Sagrades.

The man responsible for bringing Frenkie de Jong to Camp Nou will manage him again soon with the Netherlands side, so he will be keen to see the midfielder’s final decision this summer.

When I say final decision, it’s clear that Barcelona want to sell De Jong and United want to sign him. I can only see one conclusion after a month of non-stop transfer speculation.

Anyhow, Koeman was asked to talk about De Jong’s future and said (via vi.nl): “All I know is that Frenkie wants to stay at Barca. He said that a few days ago. But I don’t know if Barca want or need to sell him because they need money. He is one of the few for whom a lot of money can be asked.”

I honestly don’t think United would have wasted the past month chasing De Jong if he didn’t want to come to Old Trafford.

Does anyone really think Erik ten Hag hasn’t already contacted his former midfielder to check?

A lot of this stuff is face-saving exercise. De Jong doesn’t want to upset the club while he is under contract, and I think that should be respected.
