Frenkie de Jong fits the bill for Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag is waiting for his first signing as a Manchester United manager.

If he’s anything like the United fans we see every day on social media, he’s probably running out of patience with the recruitment team because they have yet to land any of his targets.

A player he admires after previously managing is Frenkie de Jong, so United have been trying to take advantage of Barcelona’s financial situation but an agreement has yet to be reached between the two clubs.

According to reports in Spain, negotiations are ongoing for the transfer of de Jong, but a deal is yet to be complete.

United are determined to get their number one target, but the Spanish club are holding out for more money, which is something you can do at Novibet with all the best markets in sport.

Former Netherlands international, Rafael van der Vaart, has given De Jong’s potential switch to United his nod of approval. Having experienced life in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur, he said: “If I were Frenkie, I would go to Manchester United.

“It would, of course, be the most ideal. There you have a coach who knows exactly what you can and can’t do.

“There are players at Barca who can do the same and maybe be better than him or have performed more.

“As long as those others are also out there, he is out of place at Barcelona. At United he could play more like with the Dutch team. There he is the only one of his kind.”

De Jong initially wanted to stay at Camp Nou but it is now understood that he has been convinced to unite with Ten Hag at Old Trafford. It’s the sort of signing that, if done early, could set the tone and shape the midfield in the way Ten Hag wants.

The 25-year-old fits the bill and somebody of his ilk is required to hit the ground running.

Furthermore, with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic no longer at the club, it’s no surprise to see Ten Hag targeting a midfielder this summer. The pair worked together at Ajax and reached the Champions League semi-final in 2019. Their next chapter could be in the Premier League.

It would be unfair to say De Jong has disappointing at Barcelona, but he has now shown the same magic he produced during his Ajax days with Ten Hag.

Hopefully we can get a taste of that at Old Trafford soon.
