Harry Maguire yet to speak with newly appointed Ten Hag

The mainstream media has made a big deal out of Erik ten Hag’s meeting with club captain Harry Maguire.

Many think the centre-back is set to lose his captaincy role, with David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo both considered candidates to take up the responsibilities. He performed abysmally last season but he isn’t the only United player you can say that about.

The Sun claims De Gea is favourite to become United’s next captain.

However, Ten Hag was announced as the new manager on April 21 and it has been reported that he wants to sign a new centre-back.

The Dutchman is expected to meet some of his players for the first time when pre-season training starts in two weeks.

Maguire has confirmed that he is yet to hold talks with the new manager, who he is excited to work with at Old Trafford, due to being busy on international duty.

“No, I haven’t spoken with him yet,” Maguire told talkSPORT radio, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “I think he understands that I’m away on international duty. Four games in a week-and-a-half is a lot, so I’m sure I’ll speak to him real soon. He’s an exciting appointment.

“Coming off the back of a really tough season for everyone at the club, everyone’s excited and really looking forward to working with him. So yes, I’m sure after this international break I’ll go away and have a break and I’ll look forward to meeting up with him, the squad again and see where the season takes us.”

Maguire didn’t start for England in tonight’s UEFA Nations League clash against Hungary. The Three Lions are currently trailing 1-0 with 39 minutes on the clock.
