United prioritising midfielder pursuit and avoid ‘excessive’ Nunez fee

Manchester United’s summer transfer activity will involve an attempt to strengthen in midfield, rather than getting drawn into a bidding war with Liverpool for Benfica forward Darwin Nunez.

The Red Devils will bolster their attack if the right player pops up, but ESPN have reported that they were quoted £100m for Nunez and this is considered excessive.

Anthony Martial is back at Old Trafford after a loan spell with Sevilla, and Erik ten Hag thinks that Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Anthony Elanga can contribute more goals between them next term.

Frenkie de Jong has been heavily linked with a switch to United from Barcelona, and if a deal was to happen, his fee would likely be in a similar region to the one Liverpool are set to pay for Nunez.

While United have turned their attention away from the Uruguay international, former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor believes Nunez has a ‘big future’ in the game.

Mellor told BookiesBonuses.com: “What a player! I watched him in the Champions League for Benfica and I was thinking, ‘Wow!’

“He’s only young – what is he, 22? He’s an international already with Uruguay. I watched him, and I was thinking he’s an absolute handful.

“He’s got the lot in terms of the movement, the finishing, and the pace as well.”

Atletico Madrid have also been touted as having interest in the ex-Almeria attacker, but Liverpool appear to be the frontrunners in the race to sign him.

“He is an exciting young talent, and there’s no doubt about it – he is going to be in big demand this summer,” Mellor added.

“So whoever is his most likely option – I think there is a big player and a big future there for him. I was impressed with what I saw.

“If Liverpool are in for him, then Liverpool are an appealing option for any top young player at the moment, and he would certainly be one of those.”
