Harry Kane’s late equaliser from the penalty spot against Germany earlier this week was his 50th goal for England, surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton (49) in the country’s scoring charts.
Kane is now just three goals behind Wayne Rooney, who has been England’s top scorer of all time since breaking the record in 2015.
The Tottenham forward, who is still in his late twenties, is expected to break Rooney’s record sooner rather than later and Gary Lineker has now backed the 28-year-old to do so.

“It’s inevitable,” Lineker told Sky Sports, via Football Daily, as seen above. “Harry’s a wonderful goalscorer and I think he’ll go way past Wayne Rooney, which is a wonderful achievement which he deserves huge applauds for.”
Lineker infamously missed the opportunity to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s record in 1992 but a missed penalty ensured he ended his international career on 48 goals.
Although United supporters would prefer to see the record stay with Rooney, it’s highly likely that it belongs to Kane before the calendar year is out.
