According to recent reports, Manchester United’s first-team squad are set to vote on which player they would like to become captain.

That’s according to The Sun, who claims manager Erik Ten Hag is happy for his new squad to vote on which senior player they would like to see become captain.

Defender Harry Maguire currently wears the armband and has done so since former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer awarded him the duties.

Despite being a regular in the side under both Solskjaer and then later interim boss Ralf Rangnick, Maguire’s poor form and a string of individual errors have opened him up for a barrage of criticism.

Likely to lose the armband, it has been claimed that both Cristiano Ronaldo and goalkeeper David De Gea are the two frontrunners.

Despite Ronaldo’s incredible leadership skills being on full display for most of his illustrious career, perhaps surprisingly, it is De Gea who is expected to win the majority of the squad’s vote.

Man United to change captains – right call?

In short, yes.

Maguire, although clearly trusted by Solskjaer, has failed miserably. The club have just endured one of their worst seasons ever while on Maguire’s watch – that is not good enough.

No one is suggesting the defender should be dropped to the reserves or sold, but certainly when it comes to the team being in desperate need of a unifying figure, there are definitely better choices available than the England international.
