Man United and Liverpool both in running to sign Darwin Nunez

The race for Benfica’s Darwin Nunez is hotting up.

That’s according to a recent report from the Independent, who claims the talented young South American is wanted by both Manchester United and the Red Devils’ bitter rivals, Liverpool.

This summer transfer window is certain to be one of the most important in United’s history.

Now under the guidance of new manager Erik Ten Hag, following several high-profile departures already, the Dutch tactician is certain to bring in some fresh faces.

Midfield duo Paul Pogba (left) and Jesse Lingard (right) will leave the club at the end of June.

Although almost every area of the squad will need investment, United are incredibly lacking when it comes to outright strikers.

Following Mason Greenwood’s suspension earlier this year and Cristiano Ronaldo now at the age of 37, in the words of former interim boss Ralf Rangnick, it is ‘obvious’ the club need to sign a ‘younger’ forward this summer.

Speaking to reporters at the start of the year, Rangnick, as quoted by ESPN, said: “This is obvious. Edison’s contract is running out in the summer, and the club needs the best possible centre forward. This is an obvious one. I think everyone is aware of that.”

With it being no secret just how desperate the Red Devils are to bring in a new striker and with Erling Haaland’s future already decided, one player heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford has been Benfica’s, Darwin Nunez.

Although wanted by Liverpool and rumoured to have preferred a switch to Anfield, recent changes from the player’s camp now suggest a move to Merseyside may not be as nailed on as previously thought.

Ten Hag is understood to have made the 22-year-old his top striker target and the Dutchman’s clear desire to sign him has now forced the player’s representatives to be more open to listening to offers from the 20-time league winners.
