Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has previously accused Roy Keane of “bullying” Harry Maguire.
The former Manchester United captain is among the pundits responsible for giving Maguire a hard time this season, but let’s face it, Keane is only doing his job by giving his opinion on football matches and players.
Agbonlahor revisited his criticism of the Irishman this week and previously calling him a bully.
The retired striker is of the opinion that Keane has repeatedly crossed the line with his comments about Maguire.
Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “When pundits like Roy Keane who really come for players like Maguire a bit too personally for my liking and then everyone feels that Roy Keane, whatever he says is how it should be, then people have made their decision on Maguire because of what pundits like Roy Keane say.
“I think that he gets a lot of stick that he doesn’t deserve. For me, he is Manchester United’s best defender.
“You look at Varane, very poor this season. Lindelof, very poor this season.
“As a country we should be getting behind our players not booing them, not trying to put them off their game.”
Maguire, who has been at United for three years, is the subject of non-stop criticism following his performances this season. Some of it goes overboard but we can’t ignore the fact he has not played well since coming back to United after Euro 2020.
Moreover, Keane has never been one to hold back with his opinions and he’s often ridiculed Maguire for underperforming. There’s nothing wrong with that unless you are going to go out of your way to look for something to be offended by.
It’s a joke to say Maguire is United’s best defender and Varane wasn’t very poor this season. The latter’s biggest problem was staying fit, but he performed well in the games he played.
