Manchester United are set for yet another busy summer and Erik ten Hag, who was crowned Eredivisie champion for the third straight time on Wednesday evening, is likely to make wholesale changes to the squad.

Ralf Rangnick’s six-month spell as interim boss has been disastrous and United’s issues, if they weren’t glaringly obvious before, have been on full display.

United’s midfield is a real area of concern, with two senior figures set to leave on a free transfer. Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba are both out of contract this summer and that department was already light as it was.

Frenkie de Jong, the Barcelona midfielder, has been linked with a reunion with Ten Hag at Old Trafford and Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that there has been contact with Barcelona regarding the Dutchman.

Despite contact being made, a deal is not said to be imminent and De Jong’s priority is to play in the Champions League, which Manchester United won’t be next season.

Barcelona are, however, in a tricky financial situation and United could look to take advantage of that. Erik ten Hag is also believed to be pushing.

These reports were backed up later on Thursday, with the Manchester Evening News claiming that United are weighing up a move for the 25-year-old. As per the report, contact has been made with Barcelona but any reports of an imminent deal are wide of the mark.
