Paul Scholes hits out at Mikel Arteta for touchline antics against Man Utd

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has launched a scathing attack on Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta following Saturday’s fixture between the two clubs.

A host of controversial decisions went Arsenal’s way over the 90 minutes, with nearly all of them having a direct impact on the result.

Arsenal were questionably awarded a penalty halfway through the first half after Telles was adjudged to have tripped Bukayo Saka and the Gunners manager was seen gesturing towards the crowd and referee to influence the decision whilst Craig Pawson made his way to the VAR monitor.

Arsenal captain Alexandre Lacazetta, who was on the touchline beside Arteta, was also seen frantically waving for the decision to go in their favour.

“I think Arteta is a disgrace there. He shouldn’t be allowed to do that,” Scholes told Premier League Productions, via talkSPORT. “If you see it again, he actually goes to the crowd to try and influence the referee a little. All the players around them as well.

“That shouldn’t be allowed. But it’s a little bit clumsy from Telles.”

SN’s verdict…
Although United supporters will look back at the clips in disgust, it’s the type of antics you adore if they’re coming from a player on your team, hence why a player why Ander Herrera received the affection he did from the Old Trafford faithful.

Arteta has made his touchline antics a part of his coaching since he took over Arsenal in 2019 and perhaps Ralf Rangnick could have taken inspiration from that to influence the topsy-turvy game at the Emirates Stadium.

There were a handful of controversial decisions and none of them went United’s way – challenging the manager on the other side could have been United’s saving grace.
