Steve McClaren looks set to return to Manchester United as one of Erik Ten Hag’s two new assistants along with Mitchell van der Gaag.
According to The Telegraph, Ten Hag looks set to win his first battle with United to appoint his friend and former colleague, who was previously Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Old Trafford.
It is claimed that the club had initially pushed back on Ten Hag’s request to bring in McClaren, while asking the Dutchman to assess the existing staff before making any major decisions.
Ten Hag was officially announced as the new manager today as Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar gave his blessing.
However, it is now understood that McClaren will be appointed.
Ten Hag and McClaren met at FC Twente in 2008 when Ten Hag was the assistant to the English manager in his first season. Now they are about to go full circle.
It makes sense for Ten Hag to have someone who knows both United and English football, the same way he helped McClaren settle as a coach in the Netherlands.
We hope this is the start of another successful chapter in United’s history.
