Nemanja Vidic offers Harry Maguire advice following patchy form

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is currently going through his toughest period since he joined the club in 2019 and is at serious risk of losing his place in the squad.

The defender has struggled with inconsistent form since his sparkling EURO 2020 display and is closer to a spot on the bench than ever.

Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic also went through a similar spell when he first made the move to Old Trafford and the legendary defender has now offered Maguire his advice, urging Rangnick to play him in the easier games.

“Every player has a problem with form at some time in his career,” Vidic told The Athletic. “I did and it’s clear that Maguire is not at his best this season.

“I think you can do a few things and one of them is not to play every match as you try to find form again and get confidence. A coach could play him in easier games, not that there are many in the Premier League, and take him out for harder matches.

“The player needs to feel powerful and strong on the pitch again, not as it is now where he feels that it’s not happening for him. It’s difficult to play well when you’re under so much pressure because people are waiting for you to make a mistake.”

SN’s verdict on Vidic’s comments…
It’s fair to assume that Maguire won’t be too happy to read suggestions that he should be dropped due to his poor form. In truth, it’s not the first time his presence has been questioned.

At the start of the 2020/21 season, his tumultuous summer was still hanging over his head but the 29-year-old recovered from that to end the season as one of the team’s best players. Furthermore, he was arguably England’s best player over their run to the EURO 2020 final last summer.

There is, however, a glaringly obvious issue right now. It doesn’t look like Maguire’s form is picking up anytime soon but there’s little Rangnick can do. The next permanent manager, whoever that may be, will be tasked with improving his fortunes.
