131 goal involvements since the start of the 2019/20 season. They are, precisely, Bruno Fernandes’ numbers. It’s baffling to think there are people out there who continue to question the Manchester United man’s qualities.

Yes, the 27-year-old hasn’t had his best season in a red shirt, but so haven’t many others. It has been widely reported in the last week that Fernandes is set to sign a new bumper deal at the club later this week – a move which can only outline a positive with the club in need of a major rebuild.

As United’s next managerial appointment is still up in the air, it would come as no surprise to anyone, and would by many, be greeted with open arms, if Fernandes is given the captaincy at Old Trafford next season with Harry Maguire currently enduring an awful spell with the armband.

On an important night for Fernando Santos’ side, Fernandes stepped up when his country needed him most. For the first, he linked-up with Cristiano Ronaldo. For the second, it was United’s number-18 combining with a familiar old foe who plays across the M62.

The win means three Portuguese United players will more than likely be going to Qatar later this year when the Premier League comes to a halt, with Diogo Dalot the third.

But Tuesday night was all about Fernandes’ importance from a Manchester United point of view. The man is one of many few players in the United dressing room capable of raising his own standards. Back him, and the Old Trafford faithful will soon see the best of Bruno Fernandes.
