Manchester United cult hero Diego Forlan comes out of retirement at 42

Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan, who we fondly remember for making the Scousers cry, has confirmed his plans to come out of retirement at 42-years-old.

The former Uruguay international initially announced plans to hang up his boots back in 2018 after spells in Brazil, Japan, India and Hong Kong.

It would be fair to say he witnessed the game around the globe.

However, it was at Anfield where Forlan scored the two goals that cemented his place in United fans’ hearts and, of course, their place in his.

“I heard the 3,000 fans in the away end loud and clear,” he wrote in his column for The National in 2016. “’Diego’, they sang, ‘Wooahh, Diego, wooaah. He came from Uruguay, he made the Scousers cry’.

“I allowed myself a second to enjoy the moment. These fans sang with their Manchester accents louder than anything the Liverpool fans could come up with.

“As they sang their beautiful song that they still sing to this day, I thought: ‘I am a lucky man. This is the type of moment that you dream of as a boy, the type of thing I’ve worked so hard for’.”

Forlan would later join Villarreal, where he became a real hit, before joining fellow La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

But, after brief spells as manager at Penarol and Atenas, Forlan has decided to dust off his boots.

Forlan will be playing in the La Liga Universitaria de Deportes de Uruguay in the 2022 season after signing for the Old Boys & Old Girls Club over 40 team.

We would like to wish Forlan the very best after coming out of retirement!
