Roy Keane no longer in the running for Sunderland job

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane will not return for a second spell in charge of Sunderland.

That is according to Sky Sports as Hayley McQueen reports that the Irishman has turned down the role, which was believed to have been offered to him earlier this week.

It is said that the two parties — Keane and Sunderland — could not come to an agreement.

We know that Keane has been eager to get back into management but it won’t be happening at Sunderland.

Since departing Ipswich Town in 2011, Keane has not managed a club, although he has held roles with the Republic of Ireland national team, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

Between 2006 and 2008, Keane was a success at Sunderland and guided them to promotion to the Premier League in his first season in charge. Now the Black Cats are looking for a route back in the Championship, but it won’t be Keane helping them this time around.

Sunderland are currently fourth in League One, having lost their last three matches on the bounce.

SN’s verdict

A lot of people have strong opinions on Keane as a manager despite having never worked under him, so I think the coverage he gets is harsh at times.

It would be great to see him come back to management and be a success.

Just to silence the critics.
