Ralf Rangnick says competition for places denied Donny van de Beek more playing time at Old Trafford this season.
Many thought a new manager in the dugout would see the Netherlands international get more opportunities, but like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rangnick was not able to find a regular place in his team for the midfielder.
Van de Beek started 19 times in 17 months for the club before he was sent on loan to Everton for the remainder of the season, with a deadline day move to Goodison Park on the same day Frank Lampard became manager.
This will be Van de Beek’s chance to get his first start in the Premier League since May as he’s only lined up four times this season. It will take him time to get up to the speed of things at Goodison Park, but we’re intrigued at the same time to see how well he does.
“In the end, it’s a question of competition,” Rangnick explained, as per Manchester Evening News. “Like Paul Pogba, I see him in the centre of midfield as one of the 6 or 8 positions and we have quite a few other good players in those positions, therefore he didn’t get much game-time but that doesn’t mean he’s not good enough for the Premier League or Manchester United.
“I’m pretty sure that he will get his game-time at Everton and show what kind of quality he can be. He’s a fantastic person and in the last nine or 10 weeks when I got to know him I’m fully aware he’s a fantastic team player and I wish him all the very best.
“I was in contact with him and wish him all the best for the next months at Everton.”
We’ll be keeping a close eye on Van de Beek during his loan spell at Everton.
