French journalist claims Manchester United are close to agreement for new manager

Mauricio Pochettino has been heavily linked with the Manchester United job since November and in the background there is non-stop talk about Zinedine Zidane returning to management in the summer.

It probably would’ve been too difficult to prize him away from Paris Saint-Germain at that point and part of me felt that it was best to give him a chance to win that domestic title he has been crying out for.

United opted to appoint Ralf Rangnick temporarily, with the Godfather of Red Bull’s football brand set to move upstairs at the end of the season, while Pochettino remains at the helm of the Parisian club.

But that could soon be changing.

According to French football journalist Dominique Severac, who stated on La Ghaine L’Equipe (via PSG Talk) that Pochettino’s switch to Old Trafford is “almost done”.

He said that United have prioritised the 49-year-old Argentine, who is under contract for at least one more season at PSG.

Severac adds that Pochettino has already agreed to take over the managerial position at Old Trafford.

“He won’t be able to say anything to each other before the end of the season, but for me, it’s almost done!

“I’m telling you what I know. Manchester United wants him, and he wants to go (…) So we are not far from an agreement!”

It is expected that Zidane, who was also linked with the position at United in November, will take over the role as manager at PSG (via RMC Sport reporter Hadrien Grenier).

Who can blame Pochettino for wanting out if the Ligue 1 club has begun chasing Zidane?

I think he’s always wanted the United job, but The Times recently suggested that Ajax boss Erik ten Hag was leading the race after leapfrogging Pochettino.
