Predicted Man Utd XI vs Newcastle: Greenwood to partner Ronaldo up front

Manchester United are back in action tonight after a forced break saw two of our matches postponed in the Premier League.

Carrington training complex was shut down for a considerable amount of time due to a COVID-19 outbreak at the club, so the forced break didn’t give Ralf Rangnick more training sessions with the squad of players he inherited.

Today we will see them on the pitch for the first game in almost two weeks.

The only first-team player who has yet to return to training is Paul Pogba, which means Rangnick has options in each position for the trip to Newcastle.

David de Gea will be the first name on the team sheet, undoubtedly aiming to keep his third clean sheet in Premier League games under the German coach, and United fans can see why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer trusted him even through some of his darkest moments.

Diogo Dalot has impressed in recent weeks and should start at right-back, with Luke Shaw getting the nod over Alex Telles at left-back. We also suspect that Raphael Varane has a good chance of starting the game, so it will be a boost to have him alongside Harry Maguire.

Fred, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes seem like certainties to start, with the Portuguese midfielder positioned further up the pitch – hopefully joined by Jadon Sancho.

You don’t get a bonus point for picking Cristiano Ronaldo in a predicted XI, as it’s pretty inevitable, but we think it is time for Mason Greenwood to start instead of Marcus Rashford.

SN’s predicted line-up: De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, McTominay, Fernandes, Sancho; Greenwood, Ronaldo.

Rashford looks like a player who isn’t quite 100% at the moment.
