Manchester United leading the race to sign German wonderkid

Manchester United are reportedly ‘leading the race’ to sign Bayer Leverkusen starlet Florian Wirtz.

According to The Sun, Ralf Rangnick wants to sign the £60m-rated attacking midfielder from the Bundesliga club, regardless of his role at the club next season.

Former Germany and Liverpool star Didi Hamann has previously described him as the best central midfielder he has seen in years, after impressing at Leverkusen, but this is not what United need when the transfer window reopens in January.

The report in question states that Wirtz is Rangnick’s No.1 transfer target.

A player who recently signed a new contract at Leverkusen until 2026, so it would take a big bid to prize him away anytime soon.

United need to prioritise a defensive midfielder in January or when the transfer window opens in the summer. That must be at the top of Rangnick’s list or whoever comes in at the end of the season.

Although we feel the need to question the credibility behind this story, Leverkusen’s director, Rudi Voller, has commented on the links.

Voller believes Wirtz will stay in the Bundesliga with Leverkusen.

“Not only because of the contractual situation – also because of the trust we have built in him and his family, we know that he will be in good hands here for a few more years,” Voller told Bild.

“At some point, maybe that day will come and this club will be too small for Florian, similar to Kai [Havertz].

“But that will still take a while. [My] wish is that Florian will stay with us for a few more years.

“That is important for us and for the whole of the Bundesliga and I think it’s his plan too.”
