Rio Ferdinand sends warning to Manchester United duo over roles in team

You would be hard pushed to find a Manchester United fan satisfied with either of our primary full-backs this season.

Many argued that Luke Shaw was the best left-back in the world not long ago, but he has been awful for United this season. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has not been much better which explains why fans were delighted to see Diogo Dalot and Alex Telles play out of their skin in recent weeks.

Sadly, Wan-Bissaka doesn’t fill anybody with confidence when he gets the ball in the final third. At least Dalot created a number of chances for United on Sunday and we need to see more of that no matter who is fortunate enough to start most weeks.

Rio Ferdinand has been reacting to Ralf Rangnick’s instant impact at United on his podcast and thinks Wan-Bissaka and Shaw face a real fight to get back in the team. He knows that competition for places is healthy, but stresses a warning to the right-back for his struggles to play on the ball.

Speaking on his FIVE YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “I’ve got to be honest, Wan-Bissaka has got a hell of a job getting back in this team. The same for Luke Shaw.

“They’ve both got one hell of a job. One thing this manager likes is full-backs who can actually play and get on the ball.

“As well as doing the other stuff like pressing, he wants output with the ball.

“That’s the weakest part of Wan-Bissaka’s game, there’s going to be a big fight for him to get back into this team.”

Shaw has made 15 appearances for United this season, with Wan-Bissaka featuring on 17 occasions.

We could see both of them in the starting line-up against Young Boys tonight, but I have a feeling it will be back to Dalot and Telles for Norwich City at the weekend.
