Italy manager Roberto Mancini is a wildcard candidate to become Manchester United boss next summer, according to reports.

The search is on for a new permanent manager just a day after announcing Ralf Rangnick as interim head coach. He’s expected to move upstairs at the end of the season – and to work closely with the incoming manager.

Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino has emerged as one of the frontrunners for the job, along with Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag.

However, a report from the Telegraph and thrown another name into the mix. Former Man City manager Roberto Mancini, who has been in charge of Italy since 2018.

Italy have to go through the play-offs in order to qualify for next year’s World Cup but it is said in the report that the Italian could have his head turned by United, with a return to the Premier League seen as an appealing prospect.

Stretty News’ verdict on Roberto Mancini rumours…

For starters, I really rate Mancini as a coach and think he would do a good job at United. That is not to say he is the best option this summer because I would rate Pochettino and Ten Hag higher as candidates.

He did an amazing job at City, too, and I don’t think he would turn down the opportunity to get one over his former club. He helped City qualify for Champions League football for the first time before leading the club to FA Cup glory in his first full season as manager.

A year later, Mancini won the Premier League, ending a 44-year wait for City.
