Michael Carrick explains dropping Cristiano Ronaldo vs Chelsea

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named on the bench versus Chelsea.

Manchester United caretaker boss Michael Carrick has decided to drop United’s biggest name for today’s trip to Stamford Bridge.

It’s a brave call from Carrick but what has he to lose, really? Of course he will want three points for United in a bid to get our domestic season on track.

Carrick made a number of changes to his starting line-up today, with Bruno Fernandes returning to the team after being benched in the midweek win over Villarreal, and it looks like he is packing the midfield and gunning for pace up front.

On dropping Ronaldo, Shamoon Hafez quoted Carrick before the match:

“A few tweaks and changes to freshen things up,” Carrick said. “Anthony and Donny (benched) too and Cristiano Ronaldo is your standout name. I have had a good chat with Cristiano and he was great.”

It’s obviously a big bonus to have a player like Ronaldo on the bench and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw him rotated more between now and the end of the season.

Hopefully he can still have an impact on the game.
