Anthony Martial has one last chance to rescue Man Utd career – opinion

Anthony Martial’s career at Manchester United hasn’t quite developed as many were hoping when he ended the 2019/20 season as the club’s top scorer and that season’s Player of the Year.

The Frenchman was dazzling throughout the campaign and broke the 20-goal barrier for the first time in his career, helping guide United to a third-place finish despite being tipped to finish outside of the Champions League places.

His efforts at club level earned him a return to the France national side, with manager Didier Deschamps including him in every camp since September 2020, except for this summer’s European Championship which he missed through injury.

Earlier this week, we revealed exclusively on Stretty News that Newcastle had enquired about Martial’s availability and that other clubs were interested as well.

The 25-year-old is a frustrating figure at Old Trafford but after recovering from a serious knee injury, is there light at the end of the tunnel for the former Monaco superstar?

Martial’s latest appearance against Everton, which saw him score his first goal of the season, was a throwback performance from the forward. He played on the wing, as opposed to as a striker.

Martial joined United as a makeshift striker and has never been convincing enough to secure the position but a role to the left suits him far better.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani are both preferred to Martial centrally, meaning the enforced change in position could offer him the lifeline he desperately needs.

Still, he must fend off competition from Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Paul Pogba but the likelihood of making something out of this season is far greater on the left-wing rather than anywhere else.

Another disappointing campaign could be the last straw as United might look to cash in on their asset.
