Leon Goretzka was one of the midfielders linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer but he decided to sign a new contract at Bayern Munich which will see him continue with the club until June 2026.
At 26, Goretzka has his best years ahead of him and that is a frightening prospect for Bayern Munich. There were repeat claims of Manchester United interest, although it always felt like the club’s name was only being used to put pressure on Bayern.
The rumours continued for months even though the British newspapers never really picked up on it. SportBild have now spoken to the player and asked him directly about interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.
They also asked if he came close to leaving Bayern, and Goretzka said: “It’s an exciting thing when other clubs recognise what you’ve done. I take a lot of time in my decisions when I need to make them. I weigh up everything. I talked a lot about it with Joshua (Kimmich). We actually had a vision from the start: Our work at Bayern is not finished yet, big things are still waiting for us. Hence the aim was to reach an agreement.”
The Germany international shares his thoughts on the situation without denying the interest, or even confirming it, but he’s happy to have been linked to such big clubs like United and Madrid. He is a player who would’ve made a huge difference in our current team but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. You can brighten up your day with Energy Casino even if we are still crying out for a midfielder.
But who else has been linked to United in recent months and what is the latest?
Saul Niguez ended up joining Chelsea on loan late in the transfer window, while Declan Rice remained at West Ham, when it felt like he was priced out of a move. The latest we are hearing is that United have instructed scouts to identify alternative options to Rice in the club’s search for a defensive midfielder next summer.
Rice, 22, is getting better and better after emerging from England’s Euro 2020 campaign as one of the key figures in Gareth Southgate’s team as the Three Lions went all the way to the final – their first major tournament final since the 1966 World Cup.
Another popular name among United fans is Brighton’s Yves Bissouma.
The Mali international continues to make a name for himself at the AMEX stadium and it is really no wonder that fans across the Premier League want their teams to sign him.
It feels like we’ve been calling for a midfielder like this since Michael Carrick retired.
