Daniel James looks up to idol Juan Mata

One person who was glad to see Juan Mata sign a new contract at Manchester United is Daniel James, with the Welsh winger explaining how one of his idols became his teammate.

Every man and his dog had an opinion on whether Mata deserved a one-year extension at the end of last season.

But, ultimately, it was an extremely difficult year for the Spaniard after the passing of his mother.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided that he still has something to offer and he’ll remain with the first team squad for the coming season.

Speaking to United’s official website, James revealed that Mata was one of his idols before he sign for the club after leaving Swansea City.

“I’d like to say Thierry Henry was a player I always grew up watching,” James said. “He was unbelievable as soon as he came to the Premier League and he was a great player. And also, a player that I play with now, Juan [Mata] was always an idol of mine growing up and such a professional as well.”

With Mata, however, it’s key that with a young squad that you cushion them with experience.

His impact working with the younger players will be huge and you always hear coaches and footballers talk about the Spaniard’s professionalism.

The 33-year-old will be hoping he can contribute a few highlights on the pitch over the coming season.
