Phil Jones expects shirt number request amid new Manchester United arrival

It shouldn’t take long before Raphael Varane is officially announced as a Manchester United player.

The World Cup-winner becomes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s third signing of the summer — after Tom Heaton and Jadon Sancho — with a medical penciled in for the coming days.

Last night, Varane touched down in Manchester and must now quarantine before linking up with his new teammates.

It looks unlikely that he will make the bench for Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Everton, with the focus turning on next weekend’s Premier League opener versus Leeds United.

According to Caught Offside, the hierarchy at Old Trafford want Varane to be handed Phil Jones’ number four shirt.

No decision has been made yet but Jones is expecting to be asked to transfer his shirt number.

There won’t be a place for Jones in the team again this season, and he’s played little to no football since signing his last contract at the club.

It’s finally time to move Jones on!

  1. What do you mean “asked”? Doesn’t Olle have some say in who is in the squad?
Jones shouldn’t be getting a squad number, that might give him the hint that if he wants to actually earn his wages he better go elsewhere, maybe to a club fighting for promotion to The Championship, that will be his level after all this time off.

  2. Just feeling sorry for Jones though, not really a bad defender but injuries ruined his career at Manchester United

  3. What a waisted buy from Ferguson never did he proofed his value at club level every game he starts he injured himself by not knowing what do under attack, so why mst he be part of the 24 men squad free transfer
