Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has appeased Manchester United supporters after insisting that the club means business this season. Solskjaer oversaw United’s best domestic campaign since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, finishing second and closer to first than any of his predecessors.
The Jadon Sancho saga was drawn out and probably worthy of a documentary in itself but Solskjaer finally got their man – the 21-year-old was unveiled as a Manchester United player earlier this week in a £73m move.
Sancho, who is still on holiday following his involvement in this summer’s European Championship, is unlikely to be involved in pre-season due to an extended break but could make his debut in the opening Premier League game against Leeds on August 14.
Solskjaer has insisted that the signing, United’s fourth most expensive in their history, is a statement and shows that the club is serious about challenging for honours this season.
“It’s a big statement. We’ve followed him for a long time.” he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports after United’s pre-season defeat to Queens Park Rangers.
“It didn’t work out for us last summer but we still decided that Jadon is the right one for us. He’s a forward with creativity, flair, individual skills and he’s got the years ahead of him. We’re delighted with his arrival
“It (Sancho signing) shows the fans that we mean business. We hope we have one of the best forwards in England for the next 10-12 years. We’ve got Marcus, 23, Mason’s a young lad so we’ve got an English core there.”
