Jose Mourinho is the latest public figure to shower Luke Shaw with praise after his performances at this summer’s European Championship. The Portuguese manager has, in the past, been highly critical of Shaw but reserved special praise for the defender after the Euro 2020 final.
Shaw became the first Manchester United player to score in a European Championship final with his goal in the second minute against Italy, taking his tally up to four direct goal involvements in just six games.
“People think I don’t like Luke Shaw,” Mourinho told talkSPORT, as quoted by the Daily Mail. “I have to say: amazing tournament, fantastic final, no defensive mistakes. Very solid. On top of that he improve and improve and improve.” Mourinho added on Shaw’s performances this summer.
The pair have been embroiled in a public spat in recent months, with both Mourinho and Shaw sending sly digs at each other through various media channels. The former Manchester United and Chelsea manager has, however, insisted that his public criticism of the 26-year-old won’t affect him. “It doesn’t mean much, but for him for his career, for the way he grew up very good. Very good, Luke Shaw,” he said.
Despite being overlooked for England’s opening game against Croatia last month, Shaw emerged as one of the tournament’s top performers and is set to play a key part for his club once again next season.
