Italy ended a 15-year wait for major silverware on Sunday as they overcame a resilient England side on penalties. Gianluigi Donnarumma was named the official ‘player of the tournament’ by UEFA but an alternative winner has been named by the statistical website WhoScored.
Harry Maguire was named as the tournament’s outstanding performer after returning from injury in time for England’s final group game. The 28-year-old was initially doubtful to be involved this summer but instead returned in terrific form.
In addition to stellar defensive performances, the defender was vital in England’s build-up, with the Manchester United captain often finding himself high up the pitch.

Maguire’s 7.62 rating by WhoScored was the highest in the tournament of all players in the comparison, with Italy’s Marco Verratti posing the closest threat.
The claims are also backed up by the numbers, which show that Maguire boasted the second-highest number of aerial duels won, winning a whopping 84.5% of them.
