Tom Heaton wants to become Man Utd’s first-choice goalkeeper – report

The signing of Tom Heaton has sparked debate among Manchester United fans on social media – Heaton joined the club on Friday on a two-year contract and the deal has thrown David de Gea and Dean Henderson’s futures in doubt.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was undecided over who his first-choice shot-stopper was last season, with Dean Henderson initially playing cup games and the Spaniard featuring in the league but the roles were reversed towards the tail-end of the season.

And according to The Times, Tom Heaton has immediately set his sights on becoming the number one goalkeeper at the club. One might argue it’s an optimistic position from the 35-year-old but he will be eager to prove his worth in this summer’s pre-season preparations.

The report claims that despite Heaton’s arrival, David de Gea is determined to stay at the club and has no plans to leave this summer. The Spaniard’s position was put in doubt for the first time in his decade-long career last season and is now ready to fight for his position if reports are to be believed.

Lee Grant is not expected to challenge De Gea, Heaton or Henderson next season but the former Stoke goalkeeper signed a new one-year extension to his contract on Friday.
