Manchester United are reportedly interested in Hoffenheim and Austria midfielder Christoph Baumgartner.
Extra-time goals from Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina saw Italy book their place in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals, with Austria knocked out of the tournament after reaching the last-16.
Baumgartner, who is seemingly on United’s radar this summer, scored the match-winner against the Ukraine in Group C’s final fixture as they finished the group stages in second place to qualify for the knockouts.
His performances have caught the attention of Premier League duo Manchester United and Liverpool, according to German outlet Kicker.
The report notes how both clubs have ‘dealt’ with the midfielder — which presumably means they’ve been sounding out his entourage.
However, Baumgartner recently signed a new contract with Hoffenheim that keeps him at the club until the end of the 2024/25 season. That gives the Bundesliga outfit leverage in potential negotiations but the player might feel he’s ready for the next step after impressing at the Euros this summer.
Interest from Tottenham and Arsenal was also noted in the article.
Dating back to four months ago, a report from The Sun made it clear United were watching Baumgartner ahead of the summer transfer window because he was showing his worth in the Bundesliga back then.
The Sun labeled Baumgartner the new ‘Michael Ballack’ in the piece as is renowned for playing a deep-lying role and also from the left.
