Diogo Dalot makes first Portugal start against Belgium

Diogo Dalot has been handed his first start for Portugal as they take on Belgium in the round-of-16. The 22-year-old was a late inclusion in the squad after Joao Cancelo pulled out due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Dalot was in action for Portugal’s U21’s earlier this summer, losing in the final to Germany but had his vacation cut short to join the senior side in their bid to defend their European crown.

Nelson Semedo’s injury in Portugal’s 2-2 draw with France added to manager Fernando Santo’s woes but it also meant a senior debut for Dalot, who joined an illustrious group of players to represent both Manchester United and Portugal.

Elsewhere, Bruno Fernandes has been left on the bench for the second consecutive game after a tough start to the tournament. The 26-year-old started both of Portugal’s two opening games but was dropped to the bench against France and now Belgium.
