Manchester United have been handed a huge boost in their hunt for a centre-back this summer after it was reported that Raphael Varane wants to join the club. The Real Madrid defender has just one year remaining on his contract and is reportedly a target for the club.

That’s according to the Independent, who say that after a decade in Spain, Varane is now looking to leave the club and feels like it’s the right time to move on.

The 28-year-old was close to joining Manchester United in 2011 but a late swoop from Real Madrid meant that Sir Alex Ferguson lost out on the exciting prospect.

It is claimed in the report that Varane wants to join Manchester United this summer amid his belief that it’s time for a change in his career, and that the defender is also a top target for the Old Trafford club.

It is, however, reported that Varane’s wage demands could prove to be a stumbling block in any deal. The Frenchman is reportedly looking to earn as much as £400,000 per week, which would surpass David de Gea as the club’s highest earner.
