Manchester United have reportedly issued Real Madrid with a £50m opening bid for defender Raphael Varane.

That’s according to a recent report from MEN, who claims the Red Devils’ hierarchy have followed their interest up with an official bid.

Varane, currently away on international duty with France in this summer’s Euros, put in an excellent performance for Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus earlier this week.

During a fierce encounter against Germany, Varane commanded France’s backline excellently to ensure his country kept a vital clean sheet and held onto their one nill lead.

Despite being fully focused on helping his country qualify for the Euros’ knockout rounds, Varane continues to see his long-term future speculated.

With just 12-months left on his current deal, it is becoming increasingly more likely that the Frenchman will follow domestic teammate Sergio Ramos out of the Santiago Bernabeu.

MEN claim that one destination the French World Cup winner could end up at is Old Trafford.

However, despite offering Los Blancos £50m in exchange for their commanding centre-back, Los Blancos, led by Florentino Perez, are holding out for closer to £80m.

Update: Since the time of publishing, MEN have updated their headline to suggest the club are ‘working on’ a transfer.
