Manchester United’s chase for a center-back is set to continue this summer, despite having five on their books currently. Harry Maguire is seen as the undisputed first choice at the heart of Solskjaer’s defense but there are doubts over Victor Lindelof, who often plays alongside him.
It was revealed earlier on Thursday that Manchester United had launched an opening bid for Raphael Varane, but the offer reportedly fell well short of Real Madrid’s valuation.
And according to L’Eco Di Bergamo, via Sport Witness, Manchester United ‘are ready to invest €45m’ to sign Atalanta’s Cristian Romero.
Romero has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Atalanta and also made his senior debut for Argentina, scoring his first goal to boot. The defender is currently on loan from Juventus but the Bergamo club have an option to purchase him on a permanent basis, which they are expected to trigger.
Manchester United have also been linked with a move for Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos, despite preferring to move for younger targets. The 35-year-old will leave Real Madrid this summer upon the expiry of his contract, but the Old Trafford hierchy have reportedly decided not to pursue a deal.
