The 2020/21 season was a breakthrough year for many players but perhaps more so for Manuel Locatelli than anyone else. The Sassuolo midfielder has impressed in Serie A this term and earned himself a place in Roberto Mancini’s first choice Italy side.

The midfielder is said to be the subject of interest from Europe’s top clubs and his performance against Switzerland has sent Manchester United fans into a frenzy.

Italy were denied a leading goal halfway through the first half when Giorgio Chiellini’s strike was disallowed due to handball but Manuel Locatelli finished a neat move just minutes later to take his side into a half-time advantage. If fans were not already swooning over the prospect of Locatelli at Old Trafford, they were when that man scored again just after half-time.

The 23-year-old is already one of Italy’s most important players and could find himself on the receiving end of formal transfer offers this summer if he continues to impress in the European Championships.

After failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, many doubted Italy’s chances at Euro 2020 but after impressing in the early stages of the competition, there is optimism that the sleeping giant can triumph once again.
