Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has named the Manchester United player he looks up to as he prepares to face Scotland with his England side on Friday. The centre-back was drafted into Gareth Southgate’s team in their 1-0 win over Croatia last week after Harry Maguire had been ruled out.

The Manchester United captain has been ruled out of England’s first two games of their Euro 2020 campaign but is set to return later in the tournament, but has been signaled out for praise from his substitute Tyrone Mings.

“I think he’s somebody I look up to in terms of a centre-back and in terms of being someone who is so consistent,” Mings told Sky Sports.

“(He has) a lot of pressure on his back being the captain of Manchester United and one of the main players for England. He’s a person I take a lot of inspiration from. So to be mentioned in the same breath as him is a compliment in itself.”

Maguire was doubtful to feature in the tournament but England were given a timely boost last week when the 28-year-old returned to full team training, suggesting that a return to action could come sooner rather than later.

Gareth Southgate sees Maguire as his defensive lieutenant and has even captained England on numerous occasions under the current Three Lions boss.
