Dean Henderson emerged as Solskjaer’s preferred option in the league as the 2020/21 season went on but David de Gea was given the nod in the Europa League final, prompting suggestions that the manager was yet to decide who his first-choice goalkeeper is.
Henderson enjoyed two stellar loan spells at Sheffield United, before returning to the club last summer. The 24-year-old signed a new four-year-contract but has been forced to fight his way into Solskjaer’s side.
De Gea has struggled since the 2018 World Cup, and according to ESPN, the Spaniard is yet to be told who next season’s number one between the goalposts is.
Sources told the publication that De Gea is keen to continue playing at a high level, but will seek to leave the club if Solskjaer decides to make Henderson his first choice.
It is claimed that that De Gea is set for talks this summer with the manager, but will stay unless he is told appearances are unlikely.
De Gea will return after the European Championships this summer, but is unlikely to feature much in pre-season due to Spain’s involvement. Should his national side reach the final, it is expected that De Gea will only return from his vacation shortly before the start of next season.
