Nuno Mendes has downplayed rumours he could be set for a big-money move to the Premier League.
Right now, the 18-year-old is fully ‘focussed’ on Sporting Lisbon after making 35 appearances this season and helping the club win the Premeira Liga title.
Mendes’ talent has not gone unnoticed among Europe’s elite – with Manchester United, Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool all linked with the defender.
During an interview with Portuguese outlet Record earlier this week, Mendes distanced himself from speculation of a move away from Sporting in the near future.
‘I’m focused on Sporting,’ Mendes said, as cited by The Metro.
‘I want to keep my feet on the ground.
‘I’m not an elite player yet; I’m working to get there.’
Previous reports from the Manchester Evening News have suggested that Bruno Fernandes has been talking to Mendes about moving to England and joining United.
I would be surprised if United went for Mendes in the summer considering how important it is that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is allowed to strengthen multiple key areas of his team.
United need to go all out and sign a centre-back, right winger and central midfielder. A striker can wait for another year, and if there’s money that can be stretched over we should then look at back-up for Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back.
Kieran Tripper anyone?
