Manchester United midfielder Fred was racially abused on Instagram after Manchester United’s 4-2 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Thursday.

The Brazil international has previously highlighted online racism he has received but it has sadly continued to prove how troubled the world is, especially on social media where so many users post anonymously.

The 28-year-old started the game in midfield alongside Scott McTominay, and both players were criticised for their performances by former club captain Roy Keane.

However, the criticism was on a different level via Instagram, including racial slurs and ‘monkey emojis’, as per Sky Sports.

Marcus Rashford, Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial have also been targeted for online racist abuse this season.

In the ongoing fight for equality, Manchester United recently launched SEE RED, a new campaign which aims to confront racism and discrimination. It features a video which challenges United fans to think – ‘Without diversity, who would we be? What would the club’s history books say?’

The campaign encourages fans to take responsibility for reporting incidents of racism or other hate crimes.
