Man United targeting on-loan Juventus star as Solskjaer prioritises summer centre-back

Having tied striker Edinson Cavani down on a one-year contract extension earlier this month, Manchester United are expected to sound out a new centre-back this summer and hit the pause button a new striker until at least 2022.

Despite being relentlessly linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, according to a recent report from Sky Sports, the Red Devils will now look to bolster the other end of the pitch.

Sky Sports claim that United have a three-man centre-back wish-list comprising of Atalanta’s Cristian Romero, Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Lille’s Sven Botman.

Romero, 23, appears to be the star who is of most interest to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Argentinian, who is on-loan from Juventus, is expected to make his move permanent at the end of the current campaign for a fee of around £21.5m, however, in an attempt to make a quick profile, Atalanta is understood to be open to offers of £34m.

These reports come at around the same time current centre-back Phil Jones has been heavily linked with a move to West Ham United.

In what could be a summer of wholesale changes at Old Trafford, a new lease of defensive life could be exactly what Solskjaer needs if he’s to spearhead a long-awaited title challenge next season.
