According to Spanish outlet AS, Raphael Varane wants to leave Real Madrid and the club would listen to offers if he asks to leave because his contract expires in 2022.
The newspaper has learned that Varane is considering a transfer in the summer after initially questioning his future at Madrid two years ago (Zidane’s return seemingly made him change his mind).
For Madrid, it will be risky keeping hold of the French defender unless he signs a new deal because next summer he could leave on a Bosman.
Despite having just over 12 months left on his contract, Transfermarkt value the 28-year-old at £63m, and the AS report states Real Madrid want that at the very least.
In 2014, Varane said he previously turned down a move to United because he would have faced competition for his place from Phil Jones.
He told L’Equipe (H/t ESPN): “Manchester United? They had just signed Phil Jones in my position.”
AS outline that it could be time for something different, with the Premier League touted as a potential destination. Meanwhile, the Sun suggest Manchester United and Chelsea are expected to battle it out for his signature.
Eric Bailly has signed a new long-term deal at United, but he shouldn’t be a starter next season, and the same goes for Victor Lindelof. Both can become decent squad players with the addition of a defender like Varane.
