As the summer transfer window draws ever closer rumours have already started circulating with Manchester United linked to a host of players, but one player has particularly caught the eye this week and that player is Raphael Varane.
Reports coming out of Spain this week have indicated that the Frenchman will likely turn down a new contract to stay at the club this summer, (H/t The Express) and with Manchester United heavily linked with a move for the defender we take a look at whether or not Varane would be the right fit for the Red Devils.
Over the past few years Varane has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, but with Varane seemingly available this summer the dream of making Varane a Red could soon become a reality. It’s no secret that Solskjaer has been on the lookout for a new defender to partner Harry Maguire at the back for some time now and with the Frenchman seemingly available this summer I do feel he would be the perfect signing to make.
There are few if any better defenders in Europe than Varane and at 27-years-old he is in the prime years of his footballing career. His top notch tacking combined with his excellent leadership from the back makes him a real special talent and is one which would undoubtedly strengthen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defence.
The only other defender in the same caliber as Varane is Napoli’s Kouilablay and with Varane almost two years younger than Koulibaly and arguably the better player of the two it’s a deal that makes perfect sense for United and even with the likely prospect of a hefty transfer fee for Varane I still feel he would be worth every penny.
Manchester United’s squad isn’t a million miles away from making a genuine charge for the Premier League Title and is only one or two players away from being complete and if Solskjaer does manage to get Varane on board it would all but solve Solskjaer’s defensive woes and would go a long way to boosting Uniteds title hopes next season.
