Manchester United are lucky to have two top goalkeepers fighting for a place to start, but that means a talented option is bound to miss out.
David de Gea has spent 10-years between the sticks at Old Trafford, although his days now appear to be numbered, with the emergence of Dean Henderson becoming a dilemma for boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
I hope the manager expected this to happen at some point this season because Henderson showed amazing promise in his two years at Sheffield United and last season he was one of the most outstanding goalkeepers in the top-flight.
A series of inconsistent performances, mixed with quite a few individual errors has paved the way for Henderson to make a claim for the number-one shirt.
The month of March saw Henderson get a run in the team after De Gea was absent following the birth of his daughter. The young Englishman did well – keeping four clean sheets in six games.
Now ESPN claim the club’s hierarchy view Henderson as ‘the more complete goalkeeper.’
It has been claimed that United have been impressed with the keeper’s distribution and ability to catch, as well as punch, dangerous high balls into the box.
The report carefully acknowledges that figures at United feel De Gea deserves a certain level of loyalty.
